A Summer of Growth
Nolan Souza, an Arkansas baseball infielder, entered the summer program with a clear objective: to become a more formidable presence on both sides of the ball. Over the past months he added 18 pounds, bringing his weight from 214 to 232 pounds, and shaved nearly a full mile per hour off his 40‑yard dash, moving from 22 mph to just under 23 mph.
The physical changes have translated into measurable performance gains. Strength and conditioning coach Hunter Bell noted that Souza’s bat speed peaked at 112 mph during recent batting practice, a personal record that underscores the impact of his weight‑room work.
Souza’s journey has not been without setbacks. He tore his labrum in April 2025, forcing him to miss the latter half of his sophomore season and delaying full‑scale training until the following year. The injury made his summer transformation all the more impressive, as he returned to the field with renewed focus and a stronger frame.
Arkansas head coach Dave Van Horn has voiced confidence that Souza’s enhanced conditioning will carry over into a healthier, more productive campaign. "When he’s fully healthy, his power and speed give us a different dimension," Van Horn said, emphasizing the expectation that Souza will be a central figure in the team’s lineup.
Beyond raw athleticism, Souza has emerged as a vocal leader in the clubhouse. With a roster filled with transfers and freshmen, his maturity and work ethic have set a standard for younger teammates, fostering a competitive yet cohesive environment.
Looking ahead to 2027, Souza has articulated a clear set of goals: to be elite in power, speed, and overall performance. He aims to leverage his improved physical tools to drive both offensive production and defensive reliability, positioning himself as one of the most dynamic players in the SEC.
