From College Star to Olympic Architect
Marcel Reece, a former Washington Huskies standout and All‑Pro fullback, has been named by USA Football to direct flag football operations for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The appointment underscores the sport’s rapid rise and the organization’s intent to embed the format within the Olympic program.
Reece’s football journey began in college, where he excelled as a wide receiver for the Huskies before transitioning to fullback in the NFL. Over nine seasons he amassed more than 2,000 receiving yards and 200 catches, earning All‑Pro second‑team honors in 2023 and a quartet of Pro Bowl selections. His first NFL receiving touchdown came against the Seattle Seahawks in 2010, a connection that would later resurface in his professional trajectory.
After stints with the Oakland Raiders, where he spent the bulk of his career, Reece briefly joined the Seattle Seahawks in 2016, catching five passes for 73 yards and a pivotal 19‑yard pass in the season finale against the San Francisco 49ers. He also contributed a two‑point conversion against the Arizona Cardinals. Beyond the field, he served as the Raiders’ Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff in 2022, a role that sharpened his administrative acumen.
Flag football’s ascent has been mirrored by its adoption at the high school level. Washington recently designated girls’ flag football as a state‑sanctioned sport, a move that reflects growing institutional support. The sport’s inclusion in the 2028 Olympics marks a watershed moment, promising greater visibility and investment.
Reece will now guide the development of the Olympic tournament, working closely with USA Football, the International Olympic Committee, and a host of stakeholders to ensure a competitive and well‑organized event. His blend of playing experience, professional achievement, and front‑office insight positions him as a natural bridge between athletes and administrators.
