Brendan Norton, a Swampscott native, spent his senior year at Savannah College of Art and Design piecing together a film that follows Jonathan ‘Sunshine’ Luders, a Banana Ball League player who blends baseball with unicycle tricks. The project grew out of Norton’s high school and SCAD filmmaking classes, where he chose documentary work for its ‘boots on the ground’ approach rather than narrative storytelling.
Luders’ baseball pedigree includes stints at Seton Hall University, the North Shore Navigators and the Cape Cod League. A knee injury blocked his path to the MLB Draft, but the setback drove him to document his recovery on social media while training for the Banana Ball League. His unorthodox style — playing baseball while riding a unicycle — has turned him into a viral sensation.
The documentary captures Luders’ journey from college diamonds to the Texas Tailgaters, highlighting how he turned adversity into a platform for creative expression. Norton’s research and interviews, conducted during his final year at SCAD, reveal a player who embraces the romance of baseball while forging a new narrative through social media.
This weekend, Luders and his teammates will bring their unicycle‑laden brand of baseball to Massachusetts, facing the Loco Beach Coconuts at Gillette Stadium. The matchup offers a home‑state audience a chance to see the sport’s quirky evolution up close, and it underscores the growing intersection of athletics and digital storytelling.
After graduation, Norton relocated to Durham, North Carolina, where he now interns with filmmaker Rahi Hasan, honing his craft and preparing to expand his baseball‑centric storytelling. He hopes to continue exploring the narrative potential of sports, a passion sparked by his early experiences both on the field and behind the camera.
