Shantay Legans grew up in Santa Barbara, California, where the rhythm of the game became a steady companion amid modest beginnings. His talent quickly set him apart at Dos Pueblos High School, earning him Channel League MVP honors and the Santa Barbara County Player of the Year title in 1999.
Legans then carried that momentum to the University of California, Berkeley, where he helped the Bears to two NCAA Tournament appearances and amassed 61 victories over three seasons. His collegiate performance laid a foundation for a professional stint in the Dutch Basketball League, representing BSW Weert and Donar during the 2005‑2006 campaign.
After turning professional abroad, Legans returned to the United States to play at Fresno State, where he averaged 15 points and 5.6 assists, capturing the Western Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year award. The following years saw him transition into coaching, first as an assistant at Laguna Blanca School before moving to Eastern Washington University.
Rising Through the Ranks
At Eastern Washington, Legans quickly made his mark. As head coach, he steered the Eagles to the best overall winning percentage (.605) and conference record (.726) in school history, capturing two Big Sky Conference titles and guiding the team to an NCAA Tournament appearance. His success earned him a place in the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Hall of Fame class of 2026, alongside other distinguished athletes and coaches.
In 2021, Legans accepted the head coaching position at the University of Portland. Under his guidance, the Pilots secured their first NCAA Division I postseason victory in 2022, a milestone that underscored his ability to translate leadership into tangible results. Throughout his career, Legans has spoken openly about overcoming the label of being ‘too small,’ turning that challenge into a driving force for mentorship and competition.
Beyond wins and titles, Legans’ coaching philosophy centers on teaching, mentorship, and giving the next generation tools to succeed both on and off the court. He believes basketball can be a transformative platform, shaping lives much like it shaped his own.
