Plymouth High School has tapped Brent Corbett to serve as its interim head football coach for the upcoming 2026‑27 season, filling the vacancy left by Ron Shaffer’s sudden departure.
A sudden leadership change
Shaffer, who had been hired just a year earlier to lead the program and also serve as dean of students, announced his resignation effective immediately, describing the move as the best step forward for the school’s athletic and academic environment.
Corbett, previously the defensive coordinator and athletic coordinator, brings a deep familiarity with the roster and the school culture, having once played both football and baseball for the same institution before continuing his collegiate career at Taylor University.
His appointment comes as the school seeks to restore a winning tradition that last flourished under a series of coaching changes, including the tenure of Adam Handley, whose four‑year stint produced a modest improvement but fell short of deeper playoff runs.
Handley’s record of 12‑30 over four seasons, highlighted by a 6‑5 breakthrough in 2024, underscores the challenges Plymouth faces in returning to championship contention.
Looking ahead
Corbett has publicly pledged to rebuild the program to its former championship levels, emphasizing player development and community engagement as cornerstones of his interim strategy. The coming season will test whether an internal appointment can translate continuity into on‑field success, a question that will likely shape the school’s long‑term coaching decisions.
