Columbia, Mo. — A century after its inaugural game, Memorial Stadium will once again become the stage for a story that still resonates through the halls of college football history.
A Legacy Restored
The 1960 Missouri Tigers, under the guidance of Hall of Fame coach Dan Devine, captured the imagination of a nation with an unbeaten campaign that culminated in a 21‑14 victory over Navy in the Orange Bowl. The team finished the season ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll, a testament to a performance that left an indelible mark on the sport.
Their triumph was later cemented when the university’s records were adjusted to reflect an 11‑0 slate after Kansas forfeited a win over an ineligible player, a change that restored the Tigers’ perfect record.
The following month, the United States Senate passed a resolution honoring the squad, a move championed by Senator Eric Schmitt, who highlighted the team’s contribution to Missouri’s sporting heritage.
The recognition forms part of a broader centennial celebration of Memorial Stadium, which this year will host the 100th Anniversary Game against Troy on September 19. The event will also showcase the $250 million renovation project aimed at preserving the stadium’s historic character while modernizing its facilities.
Remembering the Titans
Among the standout figures were halfback Ron Taylor, guard Norris Stevenson, end Ed Mehrer, halfback Paul Henley, halfback Donnie Smith, quarterback Danny LaRose, and fullback Laird Veatch, each of whom contributed to a roster that blended youthful vigor with seasoned leadership.
Coach Eli Drinkwitz, who now leads the program, will be present at the halftime ceremony to pay tribute to the pioneers whose achievements paved the way for future generations.
The ceremony, scheduled for the opening minutes of the Troy matchup, will feature a special video montage, a presentation of historic memorabilia, and a moment of silence to honor the late members of the 1960 squad.
University officials say the celebration underscores a commitment to honoring the past while investing in the future, a sentiment echoed by Mizzou Athletics Director Ron Taylor, who emphasized the importance of connecting alumni with the next generation of fans.
