A historic night on the gridiron
On a crisp Thursday night in late August, Felton Grove High School's varsity football team celebrated its inaugural victory, downing the Western Guilford Hornets 21-0 in a non‑conference showdown. The win marked a milestone for a program in its second year of operation, which only fielded a junior varsity squad the previous season.
The game’s opening drive was a statement of intent: quarterback Chase Watts launched a 51‑yard strike to wide receiver Sam Lewis, instantly putting the Galaxy on the board and igniting the crowd.
Watts would add two more scores to his name, first with a two‑yard rush and later an 18‑yard run, showcasing his dual-threat ability as both a passer and a rusher.
Lewis, playing safety, was a defensive anchor with 12 tackles and two interceptions, while also contributing on special teams by catching a two‑point conversion and handling both extra‑point kicks.
The victory comes as the school, located in Wake County near Duke University, continues to build on community support and regional pride, aiming to sustain momentum as the season progresses.
