A rough opening
Maine Field Hockey opened its 2026 campaign on August 28, dropping a 5‑0 decision to Liberty University in a match that left the Black Bears searching for answers.
The hosts jumped ahead early, striking first in the opening quarter and extending the lead to 2‑0 by halftime, but Liberty’s relentless offense turned the tide in the third period, scoring twice to go up 4‑0 before adding a final marker in the fourth.
Despite the deficit, Maine’s goalkeepers showed resilience. Fiona Guensch tended the net for the first half, making 10 saves, while Annabel Halkes took over after the break and posted 18 stops, keeping the score within reach for as long as possible.
Liberty’s dominance was evident in the statistics, outshooting Maine 29‑2 and enjoying a 5‑1 advantage on penalty corners, a disparity that ultimately decided the contest.
The Black Bears will look to rebound when they host the University of Massachusetts on August 30 at noon, hoping to turn the early loss into a learning experience as the season unfolds.
