Cal Poly's men's soccer squad opened its season with a 3-0 win over San Jose State, a result that marked the Mustangs' first victory in front of their home crowd this year.
The team outshot the Spartans 14-9, with six of those attempts on goal compared to just three for San Jose State, highlighting a clear edge in attacking pressure.
A balanced attack
Junior midfielder Quinn Mahoney, returning from an ACL injury and a personal loss, came off the bench and struck twice, the second goal arriving after he was substituted on and sparking a yellow card for ripping his shirt in celebration. Freshman Peyton Marmion opened his collegiate scoring account in the 26th minute, finishing a corner delivery from Colin Pearce.
Freshman goalkeeper Mathew Guerra secured his first shutout, making several key saves, including a penalty kick turned away from Angel Fernandez, while Devin Bening was shown a caution for a hard tackle on a Spartan defender.
The performance not only lifts Cal Poly to an unbeaten start but also sets the stage for a much‑anticipated clash with San Diego State on August 30, a game that could extend the Mustangs' early momentum.
