Virginia struck first just 56 seconds in, when Rylee Dennis collected a pass and fired a backhand that slipped past Penn State’s defense, putting the Cavaliers ahead early.
The Nittany Lions answered in the fourth quarter with three unanswered goals, shifting the momentum and forcing the game into a sudden‑death overtime.
A Tense Overtime Finish
Aby Deverka, guarding the net for Penn State, made a series of crucial saves, including two on penalty corners, keeping the score within reach despite Virginia’s relentless pressure.
In the closing minutes of overtime, Mia Abello found the back of the net to seal a 4‑3 victory for Virginia, capping a chaotic but exhilarating finish.
Although Penn State outshot Virginia 12‑9, the Cavaliers proved more accurate, converting seven of their nine chances and ultimately edging the Nittany Lions.
The team will next host Lock Haven on Sunday, August 31, with all home games offered free to fans, and the matchup will be streamed live on Big Ten Plus.
