A New Era for Gopher Baseball
Ty McDevitt, the head coach of the University of Minnesota’s baseball program, has agreed to a four‑year extension that keeps him at the helm through the 2030 season, a move that underscores the confidence the administration has in his direction.
Under McDevitt’s stewardship the Gophers have begun to reclaim their storied identity. The 2026 campaign produced a 30‑win campaign, the first such season since 2018, and featured a home Big Ten series sweep — the first since 2019. The offense surged, ranking among the nation’s top ten in home runs and posting a slugging percentage of .494, the highest since 1999.
Individual accolades followed. Starting pitcher Isaac Morton and outfielder Charlie Sutherland earned spots on the 2026 All‑Big Ten teams, while Weber Neels was selected to the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division I Midwest All‑Region Second Team, collecting back‑to‑back All‑Big Ten honors in 2025 and 2026.
The coaching staff also received a boost. Connor Gandossy was promoted to associate head coach, overseeing hitters and catchers, and has guided the offense to consecutive top‑10 rankings in total home runs. Brandon Hunt, a veteran with championship experience at North Dakota State, joined as assistant coach and director of operations, bringing a proven track record of building winning programs.
The program’s draft pedigree remains a point of pride. McDevitt has helped develop eight Gophers into MLB draft picks, extending Minnesota’s streak of consecutive selections to 39 years — the third longest in the Big Ten. The 2026 transfer class was ranked third in the conference and 35th nationally, reflecting the program’s growing appeal.
With a blend of seasoned leadership, aggressive recruiting, and a culture that emphasizes both performance and development, the Gopher baseball program looks poised to build on its recent momentum and contend for future Big Ten titles.
