A Late Surge Ends Cavaliers' Run
Virginia entered the ACC Baseball Championship quarterfinals with a potent lineup, but a late rally by Georgia Tech turned the tide of a game that seemed firmly in the Cavaliers' hands.
The Cavaliers jumped out to a 9‑5 lead after seven and a half innings, fueled by a flurry of extra‑base hits from Joe Tiroly, Antonio Perrotta and Eric Becker. Harrison Didawick added a home run and a double, extending his career totals to 198 runs scored and 181 RBIs, numbers that place him near the program’s all‑time leaders.
Georgia Tech’s Carson Kerce opened the scoring with a solo homer, and Perrotta followed with a two‑run shot, his fifth of the season, while the Yellow Jackets plated three runs in the fourth. A seven‑run seventh inning gave Georgia Tech the lead for good, and the final four runs came on two two‑run homers in the eighth, sealing a 16‑10 victory.
Despite the loss, Virginia’s nine starters all got on base, marking the most runs scored by a Cavaliers team in an ACC Tournament game since 2024. The performance underscored the depth of the lineup and set the stage for the upcoming NCAA Tournament selection.
The NCAA Tournament field will be announced on May 25, with a live selection show on ESPN2, offering the Cavaliers a chance to rebound on a national stage.
