Grand Canyon Lopes Fall Short in Debut Against UC Riverside

Despite Dominant Possession, Freshman-Laden Squad Unable to Convert Chances

Grand Canyon University’s men’s soccer team made its much-anticipated home debut on a crisp evening in Phoenix, only to walk away with a 2-0 defeat against UC Riverside. The Lopes controlled large stretches of play, outshot the visitors 23-6 and earned 14 corner kicks, yet a lack of precision in the final third proved costly.

Head coach Jamie Davies acknowledged the team’s possession dominance but stressed that converting chances is the metric that matters. "We had 16 clear-cut opportunities, but the ball didn’t find the back of the net," he said, pointing to a need for better passing in the final third and greater composure under pressure.

Finishing Frustrations

Freshman forward Alhassan Alhassan led the attack with six shots, while Arnau Camaño added four, but the final product was lacking. Six of the Lopes’ 23 attempts never reached the goal frame, and five of those that did were saved by Riverside’s keeper. The pattern was clear: plenty of volume, insufficient accuracy.

A free‑kick in the 23rd minute opened the scoring when junior midfielder Tarket Hamideh converted a set‑piece after a GCU foul, giving Riverside a 1-0 lead. The Lopes responded after halftime with a flurry of chances, including a point‑blank save in the 56th minute and a redirected goal in the 63rd that sealed the 2-0 margin.

Defensively, the team struggled to organize, allowing Riverside to exploit gaps despite a high number of corners. Captain Jorge Lopez emphasized unity, urging the squad to stay patient and improve daily as they integrate ten freshmen and four first‑year Division I players into the mix.

Looking Ahead

Despite the loss, the Lopes remain focused on building chemistry and tightening defensive structure. Their schedule now features five consecutive home fixtures against Oakland, Houston Christian, UC Santa Barbara and California Baptist, offering ample opportunity to translate dominance into goals.

The early-season setback dropped them out of the national rankings, but the coaching staff believes that steady progress and disciplined execution will keep them in contention for a championship run by season’s end.
