Opening Night Thriller
The Virginia Cavaliers opened their 2026 field hockey campaign with a dramatic 4-3 overtime win over Penn State, a victory that underscored the team’s potential despite being unranked at the start of the season.
From the first whistle, Virginia pressed forward, striking early when Rylee Dennis slipped a shot past the Penn State keeper at 56 seconds in. The momentum continued as Riley Savage tapped in a second goal at 19 minutes and 52 seconds, giving the Cavaliers a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Penn State refused to fold, rallying with three goals in the latter stages of regulation, including a pair of strikes in the fourth quarter that forced the game into sudden death. The Nittany Lions’ comeback threatened to overturn the early deficit.
The deadlock was finally broken in overtime when Mia Abello converted a penalty corner at 65 minutes and 27 seconds, sealing the win and sparking jubilation among the Cavaliers’ bench.
Between the posts, Virginia’s Nilou Lempers made three crucial saves, while Penn State’s Aby Deverka matched her with three stops of her own. Overall, Virginia outshot Penn State 12-9, with a 7-6 edge in shots on goal, highlighting the back‑and‑forth nature of the contest.
Head coach Ole Keusgen praised the squad’s character after the match, noting that the experience would serve as a valuable lesson as the team moves forward.
Looking ahead, the Cavaliers are scheduled to face Rutgers, Ohio State and Liberty before returning home to host James Madison, a slate that promises further tests of their growing cohesion.
