University of Minnesota announced Tuesday that head coach Ty McDevitt has signed a four‑year extension that will keep him at the helm through the 2030 season, cementing a long‑term commitment to the program’s growth.
Program Milestones and Player Development
Under McDevitt’s guidance the Gophers have posted a 54‑51 record overall and a 21‑39 mark in Big Ten play over his first two seasons, but the trajectory has shifted dramatically. In 2026 the team recorded its first 30‑win season since 2018 and completed a home sweep of a Big Ten series for the first time since 2019. The offense surged to a program‑record 78 home runs, a .494 slugging percentage, and 408 total runs, while the club also set a new standard for stolen bases with 106 attempts.
Coaching Additions Strengthen Future
Connor Gandossy, who previously helped the squad rank among the top ten Big Ten teams in home runs for two consecutive seasons, was promoted to associate head coach. In that role he will oversee hitters, catchers and the recruitment pipeline. Joining him is Brandon Hunt, the former North Dakota State assistant who brings a championship pedigree after guiding his previous team to three Summit League tournament titles and multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. Hunt now serves as assistant coach and director of operations.
Player Accolades and Draft Impact
The season also produced individual honors. Catcher Weber Neels earned a spot on the 2026 ABCA/Rawlings Midwest All‑Region Second Team and collected back‑to‑back All‑Big Ten selections in 2025 and 2026. Pitchers Isaac Morton and Charlie Sutherland were likewise named to the 2026 All‑Big Ten squads. McDevitt’s development pipeline continues to produce MLB draft talent, with eight former Gophers drafted in the past cycle, extending the program’s 39‑year streak of consecutive draft picks — the third longest in the conference.
Looking Forward
With the new contract in place, a revamped coaching staff, and a roster that has already shattered program records, the Gophers are poised to translate recent successes into sustained winning seasons. Fans can expect a renewed emphasis on power hitting, aggressive base running, and a pipeline that prioritizes Minnesota athletes.
