Pittsburgh Pirates prospect Konnor Griffin stepped onto the Double‑A Altoona field this weekend, marking the first step of a carefully staged comeback after a left ring finger injury.
Rehab Assignment Begins in Altoona
The injury occurred on July 5 during a matchup against the Washington Nationals, when Griffin hyperextended his finger while making a defensive play. He was placed on the 10‑day injured list on July 7, retroactive to July 6, and four days later the club moved him to the 60‑day injured list to free up a roster spot.
In his rookie campaign, Griffin has appeared in 59 games, batting .276 with a .332 on‑base percentage and .404 slugging, compiling ten doubles, two triples, five homers, 25 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. He has logged 56 games at shortstop and started three as a designated hitter.
Shortstop Solutions in Griffin’s Absence
With Griffin sidelined, veterans Jared Triolo and Jacob Gonzalez have shared duties at shortstop, combining solid defense with timely hitting to keep the team competitive.
The Pirates have announced that Griffin will be eligible to rejoin the major‑league roster this Friday, a timeline that could see him back in the lineup before the season’s final stretch.
