Hudson High School Eyes Division I Football Challenge

Eight Ohio schools ascend to Division I as Hudson prepares for tougher competition and playoff aspirations

A New Division, New Hopes

The Ohio High School Athletic Association has approved the elevation of eight football programs, including Hudson, from Division II to Division I. The shift reflects a desire to confront larger, more competitive teams and to broaden postseason opportunities for schools that have dominated smaller divisions.

Enrollment figures play a central role in the classification process, and Hudson’s 508 male students placed it at a disadvantage compared with traditional powerhouses such as Cleveland St. Ignatius and Mentor. Nevertheless, the school’s athletic director argues that the competitive environment will better showcase the program’s depth.

Head coach Jeff Gough, who has guided Hudson through multiple tournament appearances, believes the team’s talent matches that of many Division I counterparts. He has set three clear objectives: capture the Suburban League title, secure a playoff berth, and ultimately contend for a state championship.

Region I, Hudson’s new competitive bracket, features a condensed field of twelve schools, among them historic programs like Mentor, Lakewood St. Edward and Cleveland St. Ignatius. The reduced number of teams increases the likelihood of postseason qualification, while also avoiding some of the Division II rivals that have long been obstacles.

The upcoming schedule opens with non‑conference matchups against Austintown Fitch, Akron St. Vincent‑St. Mary and Massillon Jackson before Suburban League play begins. Home games will be hosted at Nordonia, Solon and Wadsworth, while conference road trips include stops at North Royalton, Medina, Stow and Highland.

Players have voiced enthusiasm about the transition, citing the chance to test themselves against higher‑profile opponents and to display their abilities on a larger stage. The collective optimism reflects a belief that the move will accelerate the program’s growth and community support.
