Spiders Fall to No. 6 Duke
Richmond University’s field hockey squad entered the contest against No. 6 Duke with a modest 1‑1 record, hoping to build on a promising start. Instead, the Blue Devils struck early, capitalizing on a penalty corner just two minutes into the match with a swift tip‑in that put them ahead.
The Spiders struggled to assert control in the midfield, and despite a handful of attempts to rally, they were unable to generate sustained pressure. Duke’s dominance was evident throughout, as they outshot Richmond 13‑7 and earned five penalty corners to the visitors’ three.
In goal, senior goalkeeper Amanda Cimillo turned in a solid performance, making six saves, three of which came in the third quarter when Duke’s attack intensified. Her efforts kept the deficit manageable, but the early lead proved too much to overcome.
Late in the fourth quarter, Richmond earned two penalty corners, but both shots were blocked, underscoring the team’s difficulty in converting chances. The final whistle confirmed a 1‑0 loss, leaving the Spiders with a 1‑1 record heading into the next stretch of games.
Looking Ahead
Upcoming road trips will test the team’s resilience. On Friday, Richmond travels to Washington, D.C., to face American University at 3 p.m., before heading to Farmville on Sunday to meet Longwood at 1 p.m.
