The La Salle women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Columbia on Sunday at McCarthy Stadium, slipping to 1-3-1 on the young season while Columbia improved to 1-1-2.
Columbia drew first blood in the opening half when Maya Nuwayhid converted a corner, putting the visitors ahead 1-0. The Explorers struggled to generate chances, managing only two shots on target compared with Columbia’s 14 total attempts.
Midway through the second half, junior defender Sienna Mount struck for La Salle, slotting home her second goal of the campaign to make it 2-1. The goal was set up by assists from Katerina Loncar and Shiloh Moore, marking their first collegiate helpers.
Despite the rally, graduate forward Justyce Hollenbach had a penalty kick saved by goalkeeper Samantha Mahoney, preserving Columbia’s slim advantage. A close‑range effort that initially seemed to equalize was later ruled an own goal, underscoring the match’s tight margins.
Upcoming matchup
La Salle hopes to translate the lessons from the Columbia clash into a stronger performance against Lafayette, a game that could define its early season trajectory.
