Michigan Field Hockey Falls to Wake Forest in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

A 2‑0 loss drops the Wolverines to an early test as they prepare for weekend matchups against Kent State and Vermont.

The Michigan field hockey team entered the ACC/Big Ten Challenge ranked fourteenth, only to see their season open with a 2‑0 defeat at the hands of seventh‑ranked Wake Forest on August 30.

Wake Forest controlled the early going, generating five shots in the first half while Michigan managed just five total attempts, the lowest shot total for the Wolverines since a three‑shot effort at Maryland in September 2023.

The first point on the board came late in the second quarter when sophomore Mia Montag converted a penalty corner at 24:31, but the lead was short‑lived as Wake Forest’s netminder Hala Silverstein turned away several chances, including a save on Eva Bernardy’s attempt in the third quarter.

The Demon Deacons pulled ahead early in the fourth quarter, striking twice on penalty corners, the second at 51:39, before Michigan’s Cami Wiseman tested the goalie with two late shots that were both denied.

Looking Ahead

Both of Michigan’s remaining games this weekend will be streamed live on B1G+, beginning with a matchup against Kent State on Friday, September 4 at 5 p.m., followed by a Sunday showdown with Vermont at 2 p.m.

The team will look to rebound on the road, using the live streams to rally support from fans across the country as they aim to climb back into the national conversation.
