Emily Ryan, a standout point guard who once dazzled for the Iowa State Cyclones, has taken on a new role as a full‑time assistant coach with the same program.
From Player to Coach
During her collegiate career from 2020 through 2025, Ryan amassed 993 assists, a school record that places her seventh all‑time among Division I players, and she joined an elite group of three NCAA women’s players to reach 1,500 points, 900 assists and 600 rebounds.
Coach Bill Fennelly praised the move, highlighting Ryan’s deep understanding of the game and her unwavering loyalty to Iowa State, qualities he says will enrich the team’s development.
Ryan’s accolades include All‑Big 12 first‑team honors in 2022 and second‑team recognition in 2023, as well as a spot on the league’s all‑defensive team in 2021, underscoring her impact on both ends of the floor.
Beyond statistics, Ryan is celebrated for her defensive prowess, ranking among the program’s top five in steals and blocks, and for embodying the spirit of the Cyclones throughout her tenure.
Her transition from player to coach reflects a broader trend of former athletes bringing fresh perspectives to collegiate programs, and Iowa State hopes to leverage her experience as it looks ahead to the next season.
