A Milestone in Context
On August 28, Perry’s football team secured a 45-12 victory over Kenston, giving head coach Bob Gecewich his 100th career win. The triumph came on the back of a 61-11 record accumulated since he took the helm in 2021, a stark contrast to his earlier 39-23 stint at Dublin Jerome.
Gecewich, now 61, brushed off the significance of the milestone, attributing his longevity to the resilience of the squads he has coached rather than personal achievement. "It’s just a number," he said, emphasizing the collective effort that has defined his career.
Early Trials and Triumphs
His journey began with a rocky start at Dublin Jerome, where the team opened the season 0-3 and Gecewich faced the looming threat of dismissal. He recalls the anxiety of those early weeks, joking that a short tenure was a distinct possibility before the first win materialized.
That first victory became a turning point, proving that persistence could overcome an inauspicious beginning. A decade later, his debut win at Perry was a 26-6 triumph over Riverside, a game he describes as an offensive struggle but a necessary step toward building momentum.
Balancing coaching with day‑time responsibilities, Gecewich acknowledges the demanding nature of the profession. He notes that winning is never guaranteed, citing the myriad variables that can influence a game’s outcome on any given Friday night.
Looking ahead, Perry is set to host Kirtland on September 4, a matchup that will mark the beginning of Gecewich’s pursuit of his 200th career victory. Despite the looming milestone, he remains focused on the present, stating that both the 100th and 200th wins are secondary to his commitment to the program and to supporting his daughter Teagan, an aspiring coach herself.
