A Promising Start
The University of Massachusetts Amherst field hockey team opened its 2026 season with a pair of impressive victories, first over No. 8 Liberty and then against Maine, each delivering a 3‑2 and 7‑0 result respectively. The matches showcased a balanced attack and a defense that limited opponents to just six total shots across both games.
Graduate student Niamh McKenzie was the catalyst, scoring the game‑tying goal and the decisive winner in her debut against Liberty, and adding a goal in the shutout versus Maine. Her performance was complemented by an assist from freshman Amber Fairon, who contributed significantly to the offensive flow.
Fairon’s four consecutive goals set a new benchmark for the program, marking the most goals by a Minutewoman in a single game since 2018 and underscoring the impact of the fresh recruiting class.
Defensively, the squad excelled with Rozárie Mrázová making two saves against Liberty and Colleen Conlan preserving a clean sheet in the second half, while the departure of goalkeeper Myrte van Herwijnen creates a new challenge for the back line. Forward Emily Barrett also extended her career tally with her ninth goal in the second quarter against Liberty.
Looking Ahead
The Minutewomen’s momentum will be tested on September 4 when they travel to Gladchuk Field to face Boston University. The upcoming contest will be broadcast live on ESPN+, offering fans a chance to see the team’s early-season chemistry in action.
