On a crisp evening at Matador Soccer Field, the CSUN men's soccer squad battled Oral Roberts University to a 1-0 result that marked their second straight victory. The win underscored the team's ability to grind out results while maintaining control of the tempo.
A Decisive Goal in the 22nd Minute
Kayvon Monfared struck the only goal of the match in the 22nd minute, his third tally of the season and the third in as many games. The strike settled the contest early and shifted momentum in CSUN's favor.
Between the posts, Dorian Drucks turned away two attempts from Oral Roberts, preserving the lead and recording his first shutout of the campaign. The goalkeeper's nine career clean sheets added a layer of confidence to a defense that limited the Golden Eagles to just two shots on target.
Dominance in Possession and Chances
CSUN commanded the midfield, outshot their opponents 12-0 in the first half and finished the game with a 15-2 edge overall. Corner kicks favored the Matadors 4-1, and the sustained pressure forced Oral Roberts into a defensive scramble that never materialized.
Messiah Antwi provided the assist on Monfared's winner, marking his first career helper and highlighting the team's fluid attacking options. The play exemplified the synergy that has developed early in the season.
Head coach Terry Davila praised the collective effort, noting that the defensive foundation set the stage for the offense to flourish. The victory also counted as the 229th win of Davila's distinguished career, a milestone that reflects his steady leadership.
Looking Ahead to the Next Challenge
The Matadors now turn their attention to a September 4 showdown with Houston Christian, aiming to string together three consecutive wins. If they can replicate the defensive discipline and opportunistic scoring that defined the Oral Roberts match, the team may well continue its ascent in the early part of the schedule.
