A Milestone in Qatar's Sports Legacy
Qatar's National Archives, in partnership with the FIBA Foundation, opened the 'Beyond the Court' exhibition on 27 August 2026 at the Katara Cultural Village in Doha. The showcase marks a key moment in the nation's preparations for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027, which will be held just one year later.
Spanning more than a century of basketball history, the exhibition presents over 130 years of the sport — from the invention of the game in 1891 to the modern era of global participation. Visitors can explore iconic artifacts, historic documents, photographs, audiovisual material and interactive stations that illustrate how basketball has transcended borders.
The exhibition underscores the sport's reach, noting that more than 610 million people play basketball worldwide, making it one of the most universal pastimes. Curators highlight basketball's cultural footprint beyond the court, linking it to art, music, literature and community initiatives that foster teamwork, inclusion and friendship.
Dr. Ahmad Abdulla Al-Buenain and Predrag Bogosavljev, senior figures in Qatar's sports administration, praised the collaboration that made the exhibition possible. Their remarks reflect a broader vision of using basketball as a conduit for cultural exchange and social cohesion.
The event is open to the public at no cost and offers activities designed for audiences of all ages. A dedicated section titled 'Road to Qatar' spotlights the nation's growing influence on basketball development in the Middle East, tracing the tournament's evolution from its inaugural edition in Argentina in 1950 to the recent 2023 championship.
By blending historical narrative with interactive experience, 'Beyond the Court' not only celebrates the game's past but also charts a course for its future, reinforcing Qatar's ambition to become a hub for international basketball.
