A New Chapter for the Vikings
Coach Matt Keeler is entering his second year at the helm of the Naches Valley football program, and he does so with a clear vision: to turn a 5‑5 record and a surprise run to the Class 1A Round of 24 into a foundation for sustained growth. The team’s recent turnaround, which followed a winless campaign the previous season, has set a tone of optimism among players and staff alike.
The roster reflects a deliberate mix of experience and youthful energy. While the squad boasts more underclassmen than seniors and juniors, four offensive linemen who started last year return, providing continuity along the line. This stability is complemented by the addition of several promising newcomers who are expected to contribute immediately.
Key returning players include offensive lineman James Allen, a second‑team All‑SCAC tackle whose work ethic and attitude have become a model for the younger cohort. At quarterback, junior Atlas Gentry is slated to start in Week 1, while senior Dayne Brownlow, who handled more rushing duties than passing in the previous season, will compete for playing time. The backfield also features junior Marceil Robert, the most experienced rusher with 22 carries and 117 yards to his name.
Defensively, the Vikings will lean on the experience of Robert and Elijah Menard, both of whom intercepted passes last year and will anchor a secondary looking to tighten up against the run‑heavy Wing‑T offense. Their play will be crucial as the team prepares to face a challenging slate of opponents in October, including road trips to Royal, Cashmere, and Zillah.
The schedule also features a non‑league matchup against Highland in Week 2, marking the first meeting between the two schools since 2019. That game will serve as an early test of the Vikings’ revamped attack and defensive schemes before they dive into conference play.
