Lackawanna Trail Opens Season with 9‑1 Victory Over Nanticoke Area

Star performances from Lyla Ryon and Emma Thomas drive a dominant opening win in a Wyoming Valley Conference crossover

The Lackawanna Trail field hockey squad kicked off its season in spectacular fashion, routing Nanticoke Area 9‑1 in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division I/II crossover match on August 28.

From the opening whistle, the Lions asserted control, with Lyla Ryon opening the scoring early in the first quarter after a feed from Emma Thomas, setting the tone for a relentless attack.

Ryon finished the game with four goals and an assist, weaving through the defense and converting chances with precision, while Thomas added a goal and three assists, orchestrating much of the offense.

Supporting the duo, Willow Ritter contributed two goals and Alana Edwards chipped in another, giving the lineup depth and keeping the opposition constantly on the back foot.

The defensive unit, anchored by Payton Laytos, turned in a solid performance between the posts, making ten saves to preserve the clean sheet for much of the contest.

Nanticoke Area managed only a single marker, scored by Emersyn Brown in the first quarter, but the Lions' 28 shots on goal dwarfed the 15 recorded by their opponents, underscoring the offensive pressure.

The game unfolded across four quarters, with Ryon adding two more goals in the second period, Edwards finding the net in the third with Thomas assisting, and Ryon capping the night with the final tally in the fourth.

A promising start

Overall, the victory not only highlighted the team’s offensive depth but also signaled a promising start to a season that could see the Lions contend for a league title.
