Jason Dietrich is set to rejoin East Carolina University in a new capacity, taking on the role of Assistant to the Head Coach under Cliff Godwin. His return marks a homecoming after years of building championship programs at the Division I level and reflects the university's desire to blend experienced leadership with fresh energy.
A Career Built on Development
During his most recent tenure at Cal State Fullerton, Dietrich guided the Titans to a 32‑24 record in 2023, a second‑place finish in the Big West Conference and a return to the NCAA Regionals after a four‑year postseason drought. The season featured ten Major League Baseball draft selections, including three in the 2026 draft, and earned five first‑team All‑Conference honors, underscoring his talent for cultivating elite players.
His earlier stint with the Pirates from 2013 to 2016 was equally impactful. As pitching coach, he helped the team to a 13‑4 record in 2020 and secured back‑to‑back conference championships. Under his guidance, right‑hander Gavin Williams earned the 2021 American Conference Pitcher of the Year award and was later chosen first overall by the Cleveland Guardians in the MLB Draft.
Dietrich's ability to produce MLB talent extended beyond that single standout. In total, he oversaw ten draft picks at Fullerton, three of which came in the most recent draft cycle, and mentored multiple All‑Americans who have gone on to professional careers.
Beyond Fullerton, Dietrich's coaching journey has included stints at UC Irvine and Oregon, where he contributed to eight NCAA Regionals and a College World Series appearance. Across those programs he consistently produced All‑Americans and draft prospects, reinforcing his reputation as a developer of top‑tier talent.
Before rising to Division I, Dietrich honed his craft at the high school and junior‑college levels, a foundation that shaped his coaching philosophy. Throughout his career he has worked alongside Hall of Fame coaches, absorbing strategies and leadership principles that now inform his approach at East Carolina.
