A Close Contest in the MAAC Second Round
The Niagara Eagles entered the second round of the MAAC Championships facing the Fairfield Stags, a team that had opened the scoring early and never relinquished the advantage. With a season record that already hinted at resilience, the Eagles looked to narrow a historically lopsided matchup that stood at 28‑53 in favor of Fairfield.
Fairfield struck first in the top of the second inning when Nomura delivered an RBI double, driving in the game’s opening run. The Stags extended their lead in the third with a sacrifice fly from Kuczik that brought home Schmalze, and added another marker in the fourth when Stephenson launched a solo home run.
Niagara answered in the bottom of the fourth as Curtis McKay crossed the plate on a wild pitch, and later narrowed the gap when Jason Green’s RBI double plated Noah Konings. Nick Cote’s subsequent RBI single tied the contest at three, setting the scene for a dramatic finish.
On the mound, Jack Dickinson delivered a solid outing, allowing just one run on four hits over four innings while striking out three batters. His performance matched a career high in innings pitched and kept the Eagles within striking distance.
The Stags reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning when Bucciero singled, but Niagara’s offense rallied again as Hammill recorded his 17th multi‑hit game of the season, his third consecutive such outing. The Eagles’ defense and pitching staff combined for a respectable effort despite the final score.
Looking Ahead to the Elimination Bracket
Niagara’s next test will be the winner of the Marist versus Merrimack matchup, scheduled for Friday, May 22 at 3:00 p.m. in the elimination bracket. The Eagles hope to translate their late‑game resilience into a victory that could reshape their postseason trajectory.
