A Texas Forward Joins Costa Rica’s Historic U‑20 Campaign
Kiana Lopez Wilson, a forward/midfielder from Alabama State University, has been selected for Costa Rica’s inaugural FIFA U‑20 Women’s World Cup squad. The call‑up marks a milestone for the Texas native, who will now chase a dream that blends athletic ambition with personal symbolism.
Under the guidance of head coach Ana Aguilar, a former assistant and interim coach of the national team, the 21‑player roster blends collegiate talent and domestic league experience. Wilson’s club, AD San Carlos FF, has been a stepping stone in her development, and she will line up alongside fellow forward/midfielder Valeria Valverde, who studies at Arizona Western College.
The squad will compete in Group E against North Korea, Colombia and Portugal, with their first match scheduled for September 27 at Stadion Miejski ŁKS Łódź in Poland. The tournament, held across several Polish venues, represents the final bridge between youth competition and professional women’s soccer.
Family, Faith and Future
Wilson’s parents, Alicia Wilson and Oscar Lopez, have spoken of their pride in the sacrifices that paved her path. Raised in Corsicana, Texas, she previously represented her country at the U‑17 World Cup in Morocco last October, an experience that forged her resolve.
Beyond the pitch, Wilson has spoken of walking “as Jesus” during the tournament — a personal vow that reflects her faith and the broader narrative of perseverance that defines her journey.
