Maine High School Sports Suspend Seasons Amid Participation Drop

Field hockey and football programs seek new formats as rosters dwindle

A Season of Uncertainty

The fall sports landscape in Maine is being reshaped by a stark decline in student participation, leading several high school programs to suspend their seasons.

The John Bapst Memorial High School girls field hockey team, based in Bangor, will not field a varsity squad this year; instead its players will merge into a cooperative program that also includes Bangor High School and Bucksport High School.

Meanwhile, the St. John Valley Mustangs football program, drawing athletes from Fort Kent Community High School, Madawaska High School and Wisdom High School in St. Agatha, has opted to compete outside the Maine Principals’ Association.

Joshua Nichols, athletic director at Fort Kent, says the Mustangs will enter the Maine Independent Football League, a seven‑game schedule that precludes contention for the league championship.

To field a roster, the team is actively recruiting players from grades six through twelve across the region, offering a cost‑free participation model that supplies equipment except for cleats and a water bottle.

The cooperative field hockey side is slated to open its season at home against Edward Little High School in Auburn on Thursday at 4 p.m., while the league’s scheduling committee grapples with vacant dates left by the departing teams.

Other members of the independent football circuit include the Aroostook Huskies from Presque Isle, the Central Maine Eagles from China, Maine, and the Berlin Gladiators from New Hampshire, underscoring the cross‑border nature of the effort.

Challenges Ahead

Scheduling officials face a scramble to fill the calendar as the departures have left several slots unfilled, and field hockey continues to struggle with limited interest, prompting the Maine Principals’ Association to promote an eight‑player format that few schools have embraced.
