A Rocky Start on the Road
Cal Poly's women's soccer team opened its away schedule on August 30 with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Arizona State. The Sun Devils struck early, finding the net in the third minute to take a quick lead that set the tone for the contest.
Despite the early setback, the Mustangs showed moments of resilience. However, the defense was tested repeatedly, conceding 14 shots and being outshot 6-1 on goal. The match was abruptly halted in the second half as severe weather rolled through the venue, cutting the game short after Arizona State added a second goal.
In goal, Shannon Porubski delivered a season‑high four saves, keeping the score within reach and providing a glimmer of hope for the visitors. Her performance underscored the effort the team put forward despite the unfavorable conditions.
The return of forward Annika Smith added a narrative subplot. After missing the previous game with an early injury, Smith appeared in the starting lineup for ten minutes, marking her comeback and offering a glimpse of the depth the squad hopes to harness moving forward.
Looking ahead, Cal Poly will travel to Berkeley for a September 3 showdown against Cal at Edwards Stadium. The upcoming match presents an opportunity for redemption and a chance to fine‑tune the defensive adjustments that the coach hopes to implement after the Arizona State loss.
