From a standout player in the 1960s to a celebrated coach and community leader, his impact reshaped Louisiana football

A Legacy That Endures

The college football world mourned the loss of Jerry Stovall, a Hall of Fame figure whose life was intertwined with Louisiana’s sporting heritage. He died at the age of 85 in his longtime home of Baton Rouge, where his contributions to the Tigers’ legacy remain deeply etched.

Born in West Monroe, Louisiana, Stovall excelled at West Monroe High School before enrolling at Louisiana State University. There he became a cornerstone of the Tigers’ offense, earning unanimous All‑America honors in 1962 and twice being named All‑SEC. His versatility shone as a left halfback, defensive back, return specialist and punter, amassing 1,081 rushing yards, 462 receiving yards and nearly 700 return yards while setting an LSU punting average record of 42.1.

After a nine‑year professional stint with the St. Louis Cardinals, during which he earned three Pro Bowl selections and recorded 18 interceptions, Stovall returned to Baton Rouge to coach the Tigers from 1980 to 1983. His 1982 squad captured the Orange Bowl berth and earned him the Walter Camp Foundation Coach of the Year award, cementing his reputation as a strategic leader.

Beyond the field, Stovall’s post‑coaching years were marked by service in banking and a decade as Athletic Director at Louisiana Tech University. He later assumed the role of president and CEO of the Baton Rouge Area Sports Foundation, where his leadership helped secure millions of dollars in economic impact for the region through major sporting events.

Stovall’s influence was formally recognized with inductions into the College Football Hall of Fame (2010), the LSU Athletics Hall of Fame (1977) and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame (1981). In 2018, his No. 21 jersey was retired at Tiger Stadium, a testament to a career that blended athletic excellence, coaching success and community stewardship.
