Brigham Young University announced Monday that it has appointed Patrick Mutombo, a seasoned NBA assistant coach, to join the men’s basketball staff under head coach Kevin Young. Mutombo, who previously served as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors during their 2019 championship run, will replace Will Voigt, who departed for Boise State earlier this offseason.
Patrick Mutombo’s NBA pedigree
Mutombo’s basketball journey spans more than a decade, beginning as a player at Metro State University where he captured two Division‑II national titles before turning professional overseas from 2003 to 2009. After hanging up his sneakers, he transitioned into coaching, rising through the G League ranks and eventually securing NBA assistant positions with the Denver Nuggets, Memphis Grizzlies, and most recently the Raptors, where he worked alongside Kevin Young in Phoenix during the 2022‑23 season.
During his NBA tenure, Mutombo contributed to coaching staffs that mentored stars such as Kawhi Leonard, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Kevin Durant, and he helped the Raptors secure a 2019 championship. His experience also includes stints as head coach of the Raptors’ G League affiliate and assistant roles with the Austin Spurs and Metro State University, where he also played.
At BYU, Mutombo will work alongside Tim Fanning, John Linehan, Brandon Dunson and Chris Burgess, bringing a global perspective and a reputation as one of the sport’s most respected figures. The university expressed excitement that his family will join the Provo community, signaling a long‑term commitment to the program’s growth.
The hiring underscores BYU’s ambition to blend NBA‑level expertise with collegiate development, a move that could reshape recruiting narratives and on‑court strategies for the Cougars. Fans and analysts alike are watching closely as the new staff begins to shape the next chapter of BYU basketball.
