A New Chapter for BYU Basketball
Patrick Mutombo, a seasoned NBA assistant coach with a career that spans the Toronto Raptors, Memphis Grizzlies, USA Basketball and multiple international competitions, has been appointed to BYU’s men’s basketball staff.
Mutombo’s résumé includes an NBA championship earned as part of the Raptors’ 2019 title run, a feat that saw him share the court with stars such as Kawhi Leonard and Giannis Antetokounmpo, whom he helped develop during his tenure in Milwaukee.
His international résumé features coaching assignments with USA Basketball during the 2021 and 2022 World Cup qualifying windows, a bronze‑medal performance at the 2025 FIBA Men’s AmeriCup, and a stint as head coach of the Raptors 905, where he set franchise records for division wins.
Most recently, Mutombo served as an assistant with the Memphis Grizzlies during the 2024‑25 NBA season, a team that finished second in the Southwest Division with a 48‑34 record, and he previously worked alongside BYU’s head coach Kevin Young and the Phoenix Suns in the 2022‑23 campaign.
From College Star to Coach
Before his coaching career, Mutombo enjoyed a standout playing stint at Metro State University, where he captured two NCAA Division II national titles, earned RMAC Player of the Year in 2002 and was later inducted into the Metro State Athletic Hall of Fame.
His professional playing years abroad in Italy and later in the NBA Development League with the Bakersfield Jam capped a basketball journey that now circles back to the collegiate sidelines in Provo.
The addition of Mutombo is expected to deepen BYU’s recruiting reach and reinforce the program’s developmental pipeline, positioning the Cougars for renewed competitiveness in the West Coast Conference.
