Brigham Young University announced Tuesday that former NBA champion Patrick Mutombo will join its basketball staff as an assistant coach, bringing a wealth of professional experience to the collegiate program.
NBA pedigree meets college development
Mutombo, who was part of the Toronto Raptors’ 2019 championship roster, brings more than a decade of coaching across the NBA, G‑League and international stages. His résumé includes stints with the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, Milwaukee Bucks and Memphis Grizzlies, as well as a role on the senior staff of Team USA.
During his career he has worked directly with a host of NBA stars, including Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant, Kawhi Leonard, Ja Morant, Damian Lillard and Chris Paul, offering mentorship that the Cougars hope will accelerate player growth.
The university said it is eager to welcome Mutombo and his family to Provo, emphasizing that his global perspective and championship pedigree will enrich the program’s recruiting narrative and on‑court strategy.
Replacing Voigt and shaping the future
Mutombo will replace Will Voigt, who departed to take a similar role at Boise State. Athletic director Chris Hill said the hire reflects the school’s ambition to compete at the highest level of college basketball, leveraging Mutombo’s connections to the NBA’s elite.
Observers note that the move signals BYU’s intent to blend NBA‑level insight with its traditional strengths, a strategy that could reshape the team’s trajectory in the coming seasons.
