Girls flag football is experiencing a rapid expansion across southwest Indiana, where the number of participating teams has jumped from just three last season to nine this year, signaling a broader surge in interest among high school athletes.
Monday night at Bundrant Stadium hosted two pivotal matchups, pitting the Central Knights against Castle and the North Huskies against Central, each game showcasing aggressive play and high scoring outputs.
Key performances came from Emerson Weatherly, who recorded a touchdown for Castle, and Alyssa Myers, who contributed a score for the North Huskies, while quarterback Kinley Moore found the end zone multiple times and Lynn Wade’s leadership on the field drew praise.
Coaches Tara Schnur of Mater Dei and Pat Lockyear of Castle have been vocal about the sport’s growing appeal, citing community support and the competitive format as drivers of the momentum.
Statewide Ambition and Future Plans
Looking ahead, organizers anticipate more than 100 teams will compete next season, with the Indiana High School Athletic Association planning to sanction the sport and stage an official state tournament, cementing girls flag football as a staple of high school athletics.
