The University of Hartford field hockey team opened its season on the road, only to see a 3-1 defeat at the hands of the University of Southern Maine. The loss marked the Hawks' first outing away from home and set the tone for a challenging year ahead.
Freshman goalkeeper Leah Miller immediately made history, recording 21 saves – a new program record for a debut performance – yet the team struggled to keep the scoreboard clean, surrendering three goals.
A Record-Breaking Debut
Sophomore forward Eva Nasse found the net for the first time in collegiate competition, scoring Hartford’s opening goal, but the Hawks were unable to generate any shots on target during the third quarter, highlighting their offensive stagnation.
Southern Maine’s offensive onslaught was evident, outscoring Hartford 39 to 4 in total shot attempts and 24 to 0 on target, while also dominating the penalty corner count 12 to zero. Goals came from Maddie Niles, who added an assist, Julia Elie on a penalty corner, and Allie Flagg after a rebound, sealing the 3-1 victory.
The Hawks will now turn their attention to the next challenge, a home matchup against Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts, scheduled for Tuesday at 7:00 PM.
