Southern Connecticut State University’s field hockey team opened its season on a challenging note, falling 6-3 to Mansfield University at the Kutztown tournament. The Owls entered the match hoping to establish early rhythm, but the Mountaineers struck quickly, imposing their will from the first whistle.
Match Highlights
Mansfield’s dominance was evident in a 14‑minute stretch where they scored four unanswered goals, effectively sealing the contest before the Owls could mount any sustained offense. The early barrage included a penalty corner conversion by Alyssa Czekai at 4:17, followed by a second goal from Kylee Boardman at 15:35 that doubled the lead.
Despite the deficit, Southern found moments of brilliance. Isabella Sharp‑Senior, Kaiya Mercier and Avery Vaccaro combined for three of the team’s three goals, with Mercier assisting Sharp‑Senior to cut the margin to 2‑1 at the 25‑minute mark and Vaccaro adding a late consolation goal in the final minute of regulation.
Between the posts, Lyndsay Troisi endured a difficult night, allowing four goals on 45 minutes of play, while Rachel Miller stepped in for the final 15 minutes and conceded two more. Opposing goalkeeper Lydia Miller was more resilient, making five saves from eight shots to earn the win.
The flow of the game shifted repeatedly, with Keana Criscuolo setting up Mercier for the equalizer at 36:34 and Amanda Ray restoring Mansfield’s advantage with a corner‑derived goal at 40:38. Ray added a second tally at 42:11, pushing the score to 4‑3 before the Owls’ final effort.
In the fourth quarter, Mansfield extended its cushion with strikes from Amanda Ray—again assisted by Jenna Duke—and Korimae Reisinger, while Southern’s Avery Vaccaro finally broke through at 60:00, scoring her first career goal off a corner. The Owls will now look to rebound when they travel to face host Kutztown University on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
