The professional soccer landscape in New Jersey is about to expand with the announcement that a new MLS NEXT Pro franchise, tentatively named New Jersey MLS NEXT Pro, will begin play in 2027. The club will be based in Middlesex County and will operate under Hometown Soccer Holdings, with New York City FC overseeing its soccer operations and player development.
A New Era for Soccer in New Jersey
The team’s home will be the centerpiece of NEXUS, a $350 million sports and entertainment district rising on the campus of Middlesex College in Edison. The development features a 6,500‑seat stadium, multiple recreational fields, a restaurant, a bar, a playground, and sits adjacent to NEXUS Fields, a 14‑field youth sports complex that will serve as a hub for local athletes.
New York City FC will launch a Youth Programs Regional Hub in Middlesex County, offering soccer instruction for children aged three to eighteen beginning in 2027. The initiative leverages the club’s established coaching curriculum to create a pipeline that connects elite academy talent with community players.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill highlighted the project’s importance for strengthening player development and expanding professional soccer’s reach into New Jersey communities. Local official Brad Sims also voiced strong support, emphasizing the economic and cultural benefits of the new venue.
The arrival of the franchise, together with the state’s robust youth soccer culture, promises to deepen the talent pipeline and provide new opportunities for aspiring athletes throughout the region. With branding, stadium construction, and youth program roll‑outs slated for 2027, the project marks a decisive step toward establishing New Jersey as a permanent fixture in the American soccer ecosystem.
