Brian Folkerts grew up in St. Louis, where he attended Hazelwood Central High School and was noted for his undersized frame as an offensive lineman. With only two Division II programs offering him a scholarship, he chose Washburn University in Kansas, where he became a four-year starter, earned All-American honors and later entered the Washburn Hall of Fame in 2023.
A Diverse Playing Career
His professional playing career spanned multiple leagues and franchises. After going undrafted, Folkerts signed with the New Orleans Saints and later spent time with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also appeared for the Carolina Panthers, the St. Louis Rams, the San Francisco 49ers, and had stints in the Arena Football League and the XFL. Teammates such as Steve Smith and Jordan Gross helped forge a bond that earned him the nickname 'Caveman Center' during his years in Carolina, while a series of injuries forced repeated departures from the NFL.
Retiring from play in 2020, Folkerts turned to coaching, beginning at his alma mater Washburn before moving to Wingate University, the University of Northern Iowa, and Mercer University. At Mercer, his offensive line staff guided an undefeated season in which every starter earned All-Conference or All-American recognition, showcasing his ability to develop talent despite the physical challenges he once faced.
In 2024, Folkerts joined the Toledo Rockets' offensive line staff, succeeding former lineman Mike Jacobs. He brings a philosophy that prepares players for professional opportunities, drawing directly from his own experience of being underestimated and repeatedly overcoming setbacks. The continuity from his playing days through coaching creates a cohesive program that emphasizes durability, technique and pro-ready mindset.
Beyond the field, Folkerts's journey reflects a relentless work ethic and a deep-seated passion for mentorship. His nickname, his battles with injury, and his transition from a marginal Division II prospect to a championship-winning head coach illustrate a career built on perseverance, adaptability and a commitment to developing the next generation of athletes.
