MLS NEXT Launches Seventh Season with Expanded Divisions and Global Reach

The 2026‑27 campaign introduces new tiers, marquee events and advanced development tools to accelerate youth soccer pathways.

The 2026‑27 MLS NEXT season marks the league’s seventh year of operation, expanding its mission to nurture elite youth talent across North America through two distinct competition tiers: the Allstate Homegrown Division and the Academy Division.

A New Era for Youth Soccer

This season will see 1,661 collegiate athletes take the field, while 162 former MLS NEXT participants already feature on MLS rosters, underscoring the pathway from academy to professional soccer. Since the program’s inception in 2008, 483 homegrown players have appeared in MLS regular‑season matches, a figure that has risen by 82 % in total minutes played compared with 2024, reflecting both greater participation and increased on‑field impact.

International exposure continues to grow, with five MLS NEXT alumni representing five different national teams at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In 2025, 95 % of United States youth national team call‑ups spent time in MLS NEXT, resulting in more than 250 selections, and a global cohort of roughly 450 players from 28 countries earned youth national team caps.

The calendar is punctuated by marquee events that amplify visibility for participants. MLS NEXT FEST will host over 1,600 teams and 32,000 players, while the Generation adidas Cup expands its U16 division to 48 teams, welcoming international club academies. The MLS NEXT Cup will see the Homegrown Division swell to 48 teams for the first time, providing additional competition for emerging talent.

Development tools have been sharpened as well. In 2025, MLS NEXT introduced Quality of Play rankings for U13 and U14 athletes, leveraging data analytics to assess individual contributions. Clubs now access Taka’s Individual Development Plans, which deliver video and analytical insights to guide each player’s progress. Year‑round discovery opportunities are available through league competition, marquee events, and Talent ID gatherings in 15 markets, creating a continuous pipeline for scouts, college programs, MLS teams and national team personnel.
