A Fresh Start for Columbia Field Hockey
The 2026 season kicked off on Friday, September 12, with Columbia facing UC Davis in what marks the program’s inaugural meeting against the Aggies, followed by a home game against California on Sunday, September 14. The early slate sets an ambitious tone, and the team will continue its home stretch with matches against LIU on September 13 and UAlbany on September 11, before returning to action later in the month.
Coach Niki Miller emphasized that the seven‑player recruiting class brings a blend of talent, determination, and competitive spirit designed to elevate Columbia’s program. The incoming freshmen — Avery Burnett, Veera Chidanandan, Nadia Gross, Audrey Owen‑Smith, Marisa Rubano, Georgia Schmitz, and Norah Veldhuizen — are expected to contribute immediately, adding depth and vigor to the roster.
Returning All‑Ivy League standouts Jacinta Solari Etcheberry and Margot Houle provide continuity and leadership. Solari Etcheberry is slated to anchor the offense, while Houle will guard the net. Both athletes also appear on the 2026 NFHCA Watchlist alongside Lizzie Adams and Mckenzie Bloom, underscoring their potential impact throughout the season.
Beyond the on‑field action, Columbia’s schedule includes a series of promotional events such as the Broach Foundation Match, a Youth Game, Morgan’s Message Match, and an Alumni Day, all aimed at strengthening community ties and boosting interest in the sport. The Ivy League Tournament, set for the weekend of November 6‑8 and hosted by the highest seed, looms as a key milestone, while former player Christina Freibott will be inducted into the Columbia Athletics Hall of Fame on October 22, adding a celebratory note to the year’s narrative.
