A Night to Remember at Michigan Stadium
The University of Michigan Wolverines improved their home opener record to an unprecedented 103 wins after edging Western Michigan 13-12 in a night game that drew a crowd of more than 100,000 for the 330th consecutive sellout.
The victory also extended Michigan’s night game winning streak to 12 straight contests since the 2023 season, underscoring the program’s ability to thrive under the lights.
Coach Kyle Whittingham, making his debut as head coach, entered the game with a perfect 1-0 mark in openers after a 17-4 record in 21 career openers at Utah, and his first win at Michigan added to the optimism surrounding the season.
Quarterback Bryce Underwood opened the scoring with a one-yard rushing touchdown, and later delivered the game-winning 47-yard pass to wide receiver JJ Buchanan with just one second remaining, capping a comeback that saw the Wolverines overcome a late deficit.
Buchanan’s Michigan debut was marked by career highs, as he recorded six receptions for 126 yards, while defensive standouts Dom Nichols and Troy Bowles posted personal bests of nine tackles with 1.5 sacks and 12 tackles including seven solo stops, respectively.
The game also highlighted the depth of the roster, with Jalen Hoffman earning his first career start and making his first catch, and Evan Link beginning at left guard after previous stints at tackle positions.
Historically, the Wolverines hold a 9-0 edge over Western Michigan and a 38-1 record against Mid-American Conference opponents, reinforcing their dominance in the region.
The night setting, a rarity for home openers—only the 2019 Middle Tennessee State and 2024 Fresno State games had been played after dark—added a unique atmosphere to the 103rd home opener in Michigan Stadium’s storied history.
