The Hoggard High School girls soccer team has stormed into the state final after a commanding performance in the NCHSAA 8A East regional championship.
The Wildcats posted a 115‑11 aggregate score, kept 15 clean sheets and saw Fisher Goodwin open the scoring with a curling strike from a deflected corner.
Airlie Altman and Brielle Archer added two more goals in the first half, putting the team firmly in control before Millbrook managed to pull two goals back in the dying minutes.
A milestone for the program
The victory marks the first time since 2010 that Hoggard has reached the championship match, and it represents the county’s best chance yet at a girls soccer title.
If they win, they will become the first public school in New Hanover County to capture a state championship in the sport.
The final is scheduled for sometime between May 28 and May 30 at Durham County Memorial Stadium, where the team will face the winner of the opposite bracket.
The achievement underscores a period of sustained excellence for Hoggard, which has at least reached the state quarterfinals every season since 2019 and captured its first outright conference title earlier this spring.
