Maryland football opened its season with a commanding 62-0 victory over Hampton, extending the Terps’ nonconference win streak to an impressive 19 games and setting a confident tone for the campaign ahead.
The Terps totaled 646 yards of offense, the highest output since 2020, while their defense limited Hampton to just 10 rushing yards and 75 passing yards, securing the program’s first shutout since 2022.
The ground attack surged early, highlighted by DeJuan Williams’ 94-yard rushing touchdown on Maryland’s second drive, a play that signaled a potent running game and gave the Terps a quick 7-0 lead.
Iverson Howard contributed two rushing scores, while Harry Dalton III averaged 5.6 yards per carry, and Malik Washington, after a slow start, improved his accuracy, connecting on a 10-yard touchdown reception and finding his receivers twice, boosting his completion percentage throughout the game.
Defensive Mastery
Maryland’s defense was relentless, recording five sacks on Hampton quarterback Jalen Woods and forcing three interceptions, two of which were returned by Messiah Delhomme, while DD Holmes added a pair of sacks from both edge and interior positions, illustrating the unit’s versatility.
With only two drives reaching midfield and none advancing into the red zone, Maryland’s defense stifled any chance of a comeback, allowing the offense to capitalize on every opportunity and seal a historic shutout that had not been achieved by the Terps since 2022.
