Honoring the Past, Building the Future
Gina Davis, a former standout player for Skowhegan Area High School, has been named the new head coach of the school’s field hockey program, marking the first leadership change in more than four decades.
She replaces Paula Doughty, who guided the team for 45 years and amassed 20 state championships, a record that has shaped the program’s identity and set a high bar for future squads.
Davis brings a résumé that includes a stint with Team USA at the Junior Olympics and a collegiate career at Boston College, where she refined her tactical acumen and leadership abilities.
Nick Wallace, the school’s athletic director, cited Davis’s playing pedigree and deep roots in the community as decisive factors in the hiring decision.
Jon Moody, superintendent of MSAD 54, emphasized that Davis’s local background aligns with the district’s priority of appointing coaches who understand the area’s culture and expectations.
Although Davis declined to comment on the hiring process, she is currently working as a counselor at Vassalboro Community School and lives in Skowhegan, focusing on building relationships with players and staff as the program looks ahead.
