Jack Kopacka, a former prospect of the Anaheim Ducks, has re‑entered the North American professional hockey circuit by signing a contract with the Fort Wayne Komets of the ECHL for the upcoming 2026‑27 season.
Early Promise and European Transition
Before his European adventure, Kopacka was selected by Anaheim in the fourth round of the 2016 draft and enjoyed consecutive 30‑goal seasons in the Ontario Hockey League, establishing himself as a potent offensive prospect. His tenure in the American Hockey League with San Diego and Ottawa produced 29 points in 69 games, while two years in Sweden’s Allsvenskan paved the way for a promotion to the SHL, where he logged 97 appearances and recorded 18 goals and 16 assists during the 2024‑25 campaign.
The following season, however, saw a noticeable dip, with only 14 points in 45 games, underscoring a decline that teams will monitor as they consider his next move. Despite limited ECHL experience—just five games and eight points from the 2019‑20 season—his extensive background in Sweden’s second‑tier and top‑flight leagues provides a compelling case for a return to North American professional hockey.
Because he has logged fewer than 320 professional games, Kopacka remains a non‑veteran in AHL terms, a status that grants him a more flexible contract arrangement and leaves the door open for an NHL call‑up should his performance improve mid‑season. Teams may offer an AHL contract that could be converted to an NHL deal if his play justifies it.
Kopacka’s journey reflects a broader narrative of a player who has navigated multiple leagues, demonstrated offensive capability at the junior level, and now seeks to re‑establish himself in the minor‑league system that once served as a stepping stone to the NHL.
