Villanova Field Hockey Team Routs New Haven 10-0, Improves to 3-1

A dominant home opener showcases depth and defense as the Wildcats prepare for next challenge

The Villanova field hockey team improved its season record to 3-1 with a commanding 10-0 win over New Haven in the home opener, a performance that highlighted both offensive firepower and defensive solidity.

A Historic Offensive Display

Villanova's attack was relentless, generating 13 shots and five penalty corners in the opening quarter while the Chargers failed to register a single shot. Nine distinct players found the net, tying for the second-highest number of goals in program history, and the team built a 6-0 lead by halftime.

Early in the contest, Colleen Finnan opened the scoring just 1.5 minutes in, followed swiftly by Aimee Largoza's goal 45 seconds later, and Adie Minnella's first collegiate tally, giving Villanova a 3-0 advantage before the first quarter concluded. Ava Borkowski assisted Minnella's goal, marking her first contribution of the season, while Erin Mitchell later set up Borkowski for the fourth goal in the second quarter. Carey Werley added her first goal of the year, extending the lead to 6-0 at the break.

Freshman goalkeeper Famke Poolman made her debut and secured the shutout, saving the only shot faced by New Haven, while Maddi Sears and Poolman combined to preserve the clean sheet. The defensive effort was underscored by the team's ability to keep the Chargers without a shot through the entire match.

The Wildcats' depth was further illustrated when Gemma Lysaght, with assists from Maeve Boston and Esmee De Lange, netted her fifth goal of the season, pushing the score to 7-0 in the third quarter. Later, Evangeline Minnella and Gemma Lysaght set up Shannon Arber for her second goal, and Addie Foehlich capped the scoring with a final tally assisted by Molly Zimmerman, sealing a 10-0 victory.

With the win, Maddi Sears improved to a 3-1 record on the season, and the team now looks forward to a home match against Queens University of Charlotte at Snell Field on Friday, September 11.
