Long Island hockey players gathered at the Dix Hills Ice Rink, just off Vanderbilt Parkway, for a 24‑hour marathon match that stretched from sunrise to sunrise on Labor Day weekend.
The event, organized by Hockey Helps, is an annual tradition that has been running for 13 years, drawing participants who skate continuously for a full day to raise money for local charities.
A Tradition of Giving
Founded by Jim Flanagan, the president and driving force behind Hockey Helps, the marathon brings together players of all ages to support children and young people facing illness, economic hardship and other challenges.
Since the first game 13 years ago, the marathon has raised more than $7 million, a milestone that underscores the community’s sustained commitment to the cause.
The funds have been directed toward programs that provide medical treatment, financial assistance and mentorship, helping youth overcome the difficulties that accompany health crises and poverty.
Organizers note that the endurance required to skate nonstop for a full day not only tests athletic stamina but also fosters a powerful sense of solidarity among participants, sponsors and volunteers who share a common purpose.
